A yeast infection is also known as candidiasis and is a common infection caused by the fungus, Candida albicans. Vaginal yeast infection are very common, but yeast infections can happen in other parts of the body as well such as the skin, genitals, mouth, throat, and even in the blood.

Yeast infections aren’t contagious like colds or viruses. The yeast is already in the body in small amounts. It’s when there is an overgrowth of this yeast that it becomes a problem. There are a variety of different kinds of probiotics including lactobacillus bulgaricus, lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus casei, streptococcus thermophilus (not the same as strep throat), and bifidobacteria. These are big names that fall under the umbrella of being a probiotic.

Probiotics Are a Natural Remedy for a Yeast Infection

Studies have shown that regular use of probiotics can not only help treat yeast infections, but can prevent yeast infections as well. The lactobacillus species (in particular, acidophilus) have proven to be most beneficial when treating and preventing recurrent yeast infections. It’s also usually the easiest to find.

When using probiotics as a natural yeast infection cure, it’s best to mix up the different kinds of the lactobacillus species to make sure there isn’t too much of one. Each will serve their purpose. Lactobacillus can be found in a variety of different foods including yogurt and cheeses. For those who are lactose intolerant or sensitive to dairy, other food sources that contain acidophilus or other lactobacillus species are carrots, rice starch, soybeans, and garbanzo beans.

A typical daily dose of acidophilus is about 3 to 5 billion live organisms. Health food stores usually have this in powder form, as well as capsules or tablets. The only downside of using these live organisms is that they have a really short shelf life, so you’ll need to make sure you use them quickly. Also, some studies have shown that some acidophilus capsules did not include any live organisms, so be sure the label specifically says there are living organisms at the time of purchase, not just during manufacturing.

Treating yeast infections is something the majority of people have to do at least once in their lives but using probiotics will not only help regulate the digestive system and keep a healthy gut, but help your body fight against yeast infections.

      Yes, Probiotics are great and regular use of probiotics may prevent recurring yeast infections. However, if you keep getting recurrent yeast infections, you should seek medical help.

  • When I read this story I realized just how similar it was to my condition. I suffered through a severe case of vaginal yeast infection that would not let up. The itching, burning and swelling of my labia were simply unbearable. Drugs, creams and lotions are designed to tackle the symptoms of yeast infections, not the real cause. This is why most conventional treatments for candida infection which work as a temporary band aid solution, fail to work in the long run. Even probiotic therapy which is considered an alternative, natural treatment that re-establishes the balance between the good bacteria and the bad bacteria in your digestive tract, fails to work in the long run simply because the root cause of Candida infection is still ignored. I don’t use drugs or creams anymore to bring me through the nightmare of yeast infections that was my reality for too long!
